EV charger installation in Durban

EV chargers for Durban homes, complexes and office parks, specified for humid, salty coastal air and installed with a CoC.

EV charging built for Durban’s coast

Durban is hard on outdoor equipment. Near the coast, warm, humid air and salt spray can corrode fixings, enclosures and connectors over time. A charger that’s fine in a Joburg garage may need a different spec in an open bay in Umhlanga.

Our KwaZulu-Natal team [based in [Suburb]] handles site assessments, supply, installation, commissioning and the Certificate of Compliance across the eThekwini metro.

How we specify for coastal sites

For homes and businesses near the coast, especially in Umhlanga, La Lucia, Durban North and the beachfront, we pay attention to:

  • Enclosure rating. A suitable IP (ingress protection) rating for dust and water, and an IK (impact) rating for exposed or public bays.
  • Sealed cable entries. Correct glands and sealing so moist air doesn’t get into the charger or isolator.
  • Corrosion-resistant fixings. Stainless steel or equivalent fixings and brackets, not plain zinc-plated ones.
  • Placement. A covered bay or the lee side of a wall, where possible, to limit exposure.
  • Maintenance. Periodic checks of seals, fixings and connectors. See maintenance and support.

Check enclosure ratings when you compare home and wallbox chargers or commercial chargers.

Homes along the upper highway

In Westville, Kloof and Hillcrest, the salt exposure drops, but large stands, slopes and long driveways bring their own challenges: longer cable runs, trenching on sloped ground and garages set well away from the DB board. A site assessment pins down the route and the cost.

Complexes and office parks

Durban’s coastal strip is full of sectional title complexes and office parks, especially around Umhlanga Ridge. Shared parking means trustee or landlord approval, fair metering and often load management. See EV charging in a complex for residents, or office park EV charging for landlords and facilities managers.

Your supply: eThekwini

Most of Durban buys electricity from eThekwini Municipality. A standard charger on your existing supply needs a dedicated circuit and a CoC. If you need a supply upgrade or want to add solar, we handle the paperwork with the municipality where an application is required. Read more about the CoC for EV chargers.

What's different about installing in Durban

  • Built for the coast

Humid, salty air is hard on outdoor electrical equipment. Near the coast we specify suitable IP and IK ratings, sealed glands and stainless or corrosion-resistant fixings.

  • eThekwini supply

Most of Durban buys electricity from eThekwini Municipality. A standard charger needs a dedicated circuit and a CoC; where an upgrade or solar application is needed, we handle the paperwork.

  • Coastal complexes and office parks

From Umhlanga Ridge office parks to La Lucia and Durban North complexes, many installs involve shared parking, so we plan for approval, metering and load sharing.

Our process

How it works

One team from first enquiry to a working, certified charger. You always know what happens next.

We check your supply, available load, cable route and mounting position, on site or from photos.

  3. 3

    Quote

A written, itemised quote: charger, installation, any upgrades and the CoC. No surprises later.

  4. 4

    Installation

Registered electricians install a dedicated, protected circuit and mount the charger neatly.

  5. 5

    Commissioning & handover

We configure the charger, test it with you, hand over the CoC and show you how to use it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Speak with StrataCharge by phone, WhatsApp or email.

Will a charger survive Durban's humidity and sea air?

Yes, if it's specified and installed for it. We choose chargers with suitable IP and IK ratings for the location, seal every cable entry and use corrosion-resistant fixings. Covered bays help too.

Do I need to apply to eThekwini for an EV charger?

We haven't confirmed an eThekwini requirement specific to EV chargers. The new circuit needs a Certificate of Compliance. If you need a supply upgrade or are adding solar, we handle the paperwork with the municipality where an application is required.

Do you cover the upper highway area?

Yes, including Westville, Pinetown, Kloof and Hillcrest. [Confirm service radius, and whether Ballito and the north coast are covered.]

Do you need to maintain coastal chargers more often?

We recommend a periodic check of seals, fixings and connectors for exposed coastal installs. Our maintenance plans can include this.
