Assumptions behind the estimate
The calculator multiplies the distance you drive by your car's energy use (kWh per 100 km), adds about 10% for charging losses, and multiplies the result by a blend of your home and public charging rates in rand per kWh. The default home rate of R3.00/kWh is an example only [verify against the current Eskom/municipal tariff]. Tariffs differ by municipality, by tariff type and, on time-of-use tariffs such as Eskom Homeflex, by time of day, so replace the default with the rate on your own bill for a better estimate. The result excludes fixed monthly charges, the cost of the charger and installation, and any solar generation. It is an estimate, not a quote or a guarantee of savings.
Using the calculator
Start with three numbers: how far you drive in a typical month, the type of car you drive (each preset uses a typical energy use in kWh per 100 km), and what you pay per kWh. The calculator does the rest and shows a monthly cost, a cost per 100 km and the comparison with a similar petrol car.
If you sometimes charge on the road, set the share of charging you do at home and the public rate you pay. Public DC charging is usually priced well above home tariffs, so the more you charge at home, the lower your monthly cost.
What the estimate leaves out
The calculator does not include the upfront cost of a charger or installation. To budget for that, see our home charging packages or request a quote. If you are unsure which charger you need, try the charger sizing tool or browse our home EV chargers.
Where do I find my electricity rate?
Check your latest municipal or Eskom bill, or your prepaid token receipt. It shows the energy charge in cents or rand per kWh. If you are on a stepped or time-of-use tariff, use the rate that applies when you usually charge.
Is there a special EV tariff in South Africa?
We have not found an EV-specific tariff from Eskom or a municipality. Time-of-use tariffs may make overnight charging cheaper where they are available. Check with your supplier.
Does charging with solar make it free?
Solar surplus can cover part of your charging, but it depends on your system size, battery and when the car is parked at home. The calculator does not model solar, so treat its result as a grid-only estimate.
